ARKTALAS

The "Arktalas Hoavva" project characterizes large-scale interactive processes and feedbacks that cause changes in the Arctic sea ice and the Arctic Ocean and the surrounding oceans using satellite observations, direct observations and modeling tools.

KeyCLIM

In the project "Key Earth System processes to understand Arctic climate warming and Northern latitude hydrological cycle changes", researchers will improve the Norwegian climate model NorESM with the aim of understanding and reducing the uncertainty of projected climate changes in northern regions, with a focus on Arctic warming.

COMFORT

n the project "Our common future ocean in the Earth system – quantifying coupled cycles of carbon, oxygen, and nutrients for determining and achieving safe operating spaces with respect to tipping points", researchers will find out what possibly happens to marine ecosystems when different tipping points are passed. Experts from different disciplines work closely together and stakeholders are also closely linked to the work.

S23Eddy

In the sea near Lofoten, there are large eddies that can be seen on the surface and reach down to a depth of 1000 m. With the combined use of satellite and ocean data, researchers in the project "Synergy to Characterization of 3D Eddy Structures" are trying to find out more about the eddies. What characterizes the currents, what is their significance for the ecosystem in the area and how is the interaction between the atmosphere and the sea affected?

FYB II

By including school pupils in Norway and the USA, the project "Float Your Boat" aims for the rising generation to better understand processes in the Arctic that affect the climate. The students make small wooden boats and ice buoys that can be followed via GPS on their journey in and out of the Arctic.

CAPARDUS

The project "Capacity-building in Arctic standardization development" investigates how an "Arctic Best Practice System" can be built up as a useful tool for research, business activity and planning in the Arctic. , The project maps standards, guidelines and practical methods used by the local population in areas such as Svalbard, Greenland, Russia and Alaska. The topics included are data collection and data sharing, resource utilization, shipping, tourism, security and communication between researchers and local communities.

NorArgo2

A multitude of Argo buoys float up and down in the water column in all the world's oceans. They collect information about the ocean that is of great importance for research, monitoring and climate modelling. The project "A Norwegian Argo Infrastructure - a contribution to the European and global Argo infrastructure" supports the program with up to 50 Argo buoys in the Nordic Seas, the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

UNDER ICE & CANAPE 

In the project "UNDER-ICE & CANAPE: Analysis and publication" a method has been established to assimilate distance- and depth-averaged sound speed derived from acoustic tomography observations. The published study demonstrates the utility of acoustic tomography observations to improve ocean state estimates.

SERUS

The aim of the project "Building socio-ecological resilience through urban green, blue and white space" is to improve life in Arctic cities with regard to socio-ecological resilience. Focus must be placed on areas with plants, open water and snow or ice cover and its importance for quality of life.

INES

Estimating the way in which the climate throughout the world is going to change is useful for the world community at different levels. CMIP (coupled model intercomparison project) will soon start phase 7, where the Norwegian model NorESM will again be involved to contribute to improved climate forecasts. These are used in the IPCC reports and other assessments. The project "Infrastructure for Norwegian Earth System modelling" works to prepare the model for this work.
