Observation systems We develop products and services related to the acquisition of observation data from satellites and direct measurements, as well as analysis and presentation of the different types of data. The observation data primarily concerns ocean and sea-ice conditions such as temperatures, chlorophyll and nutrients, sea level, waves, ocean currents, and sea-ice cover. Through analyses, the desired information is extracted and quality controlled, and this gives us new knowledge about the important processes in and at sea. Collected and analyzed information can be presented as images, animations, sound files, and other types of data sets. Most of our research is publicly available. Data products from satellitesWe develop advanced methods and tools that extract new information from satellite observations, and which compile and visualize the results. The products can provide information on ocean currents, sea surface temperature and sea level, as well as the amount and type of sea ice. Data products from rigs and buoysThe conditions in the sea and sea ice affect the development of climate and environmental conditions. Observations of the conditions in the sea and sea ice can be obtained via measuring instruments on board boats, mounted on rigs in the sea, and on surface buoys that drift freely in the ice or in the sea. Processing tools for satellite dataAt the Nansen Center, processing tools have been developed for earth observation data from various satellite sensors, data from measurements on the surface or in the sea, and data from our models.
