Arctic Ocean 2050

A new Arctic Ocean requires new knowledge and insight into changes, how they interact and links to areas further south. The Arctic Ocean is fundamentally changing as a result of ongoing climate change. Within the next 25 years, summer ice in the Arctic Ocean will be a thing of the past. Together with this plain to see change, comes other changes that may be of critical importance, but are less visible. This recalibration of the Arctic Ocean has revealed that the prevailing understanding is not sufficient. "Arctic Ocean 2050" brings together the full width of the Norwegian research community in a joint, interdisciplinary research program. "Arctic Ocean 2050" will provide fundamental and applicable knowledge and skills that are urgently needed. This ten-year program will facilitate the development and implementation of updated management principles in the new, blue Arctic Ocean.

INES2

The project "Infrastructure for Norwegian Earth System modelling phase 2" (INES2) will provide infrastructure for the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) – e.g. documentation, efficiency, storage and validation. It will allow NorESM to comply with the high standards of the climate community and advance the capabilities to address a complex set of questions needed for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as the development of Climate services.

INOSOP

The project “India-Norway Collaboration on Sustainable Ocean Planning” (INOSOP) is a bilateral partnership between India and Norway that focuses on Marine Spatial Planning and sustainable integrated ocean management. Its aim is to support science-based decision-making, strengthen the blue economy, and address climate change impacts along India’s coastline, particularly in the states and territories of Odisha, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh.

BioCrystal

In the project «Biogeochemistry in sea ice environments» (BioCrystal), a coordinated effort is undertaken at the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research with the overarching objective of advancing the understanding of the role of sea ice in regulating the polar primary production and global biogeochemical cycles in a changing climate. The project is led by UiB, together with the Nansen Center.

GRADIENT

The project «Global Responses and Drivers of the Tropical Pacific Zonal SST gradient Trend» (GRADIENT) aims to clarify how tropical Pacific gradient trends relate to external forcing and global climate impacts by combining proxy data and modeling. It will reconstruct past ocean and atmospheric states, identify thermodynamic and dynamic controls, develop future climate storylines for tropical and Atlantic-Arctic change, and build a resilient cross-disciplinary tropical climate research group at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

NorCPMNext

The goal of the project «Pioneering subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction of regional climate and extremes through hybrid AI–physics modelling» (NorCPMNext) is to deliver reliable regional climate and extreme event predictions at subseasonal-to-seasonal timescales to the research community and society.

OCEANITY

The goal of the project «Actionable "Digital Twin of the Ocean" (DTO) applications for wide policy, industry and civil society decision making» (OCEANITY) is to develop and operationalise the next generation of user-driven DTO domain applications that support sustainable ocean and coastal management, blue economies, and climate adaptation. Building on EDITO-ML, EDITO, and other key EU and Mission projects, OCEANITY will deliver multi-functional domain applications: 1. Coastal & Urban Resilience, 2. Marine Spatial Planning, and 3. Sustainable Maritime Operations.

Beyond Arctic PASSION

VibrioWave

The societal impact of a future increase of Vibrio bacteria prevalence along the Norwegian coast and incidence of infections in the population can pose a substantial challenge to governments, seafood industry and public health, in particular for the vulnerable and at risk-population. The objective of the project "VibrioWave: Pathogenic Vibrio spp. in Norway applying a One Health approach: current and future challenges" is to provide a comprehensive foresight analysis to guide prevention and mitigation efforts based on advanced understanding of human pathogenic vibrios in Norway.
