Arctic Ocean 2050

A new Arctic Ocean requires new knowledge and insight into changes, how they interact and links to areas further south. The Arctic Ocean is fundamentally changing as a result of ongoing climate change. Within the next 25 years, summer ice in the Arctic Ocean will be a thing of the past. Together with this plain to see change, comes other changes that may be of critical importance, but are less visible. This recalibration of the Arctic Ocean has revealed that the prevailing understanding is not sufficient. "Arctic Ocean 2050" brings together the full width of the Norwegian research community in a joint, interdisciplinary research program. "Arctic Ocean 2050" will provide fundamental and applicable knowledge and skills that are urgently needed. This ten-year program will facilitate the development and implementation of updated management principles in the new, blue Arctic Ocean.

INES2

The project "Infrastructure for Norwegian Earth System modelling phase 2" (INES2) will provide infrastructure for the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) – e.g. documentation, efficiency, storage and validation. It will allow NorESM to comply with the high standards of the climate community and advance the capabilities to address a complex set of questions needed for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as the development of Climate services.

VibrioWave

The societal impact of a future increase of Vibrio bacteria prevalence along the Norwegian coast and incidence of infections in the population can pose a substantial challenge to governments, seafood industry and public health, in particular for the vulnerable and at risk-population. The objective of the project "VibrioWave: Pathogenic Vibrio spp. in Norway applying a One Health approach: current and future challenges" is to provide a comprehensive foresight analysis to guide prevention and mitigation efforts based on advanced understanding of human pathogenic vibrios in Norway.

RASI

The Arctic is warming rapidly, making targeted cooling strategies essential. In the project "Re-thickening Arctic Sea Ice", researchers will investigate sea ice re-thickening methods to enhance ice thickness and reflectivity, potentially mitigating climate change. By integrating climate modeling and engaging with local ecosystems, the project aims to develop scalable, environmentally friendly solutions to preserve Arctic sea ice.

CLIMATE FUTURES

"Climate Futures" is a center for Research-based Innovation that aims to produce new and innovative solutions to be able to predict and manage climate risks from ten days to ten years in the future. Stakeholders from various fields such as insurance, shipping, agriculture, fisheries, hydropower, public agencies and more, work closely together in the project.

Cryo-TEMPO

The European satellite mission CryoSat-2 has been circling the world since 2010. The satellite sends a lot of useful information, especially from the polar regions. In the project "CryoSat-2 thematic products", products are developed to use the satellite data in the best possible way. The products will help improve research on sea ice, land ice, polar seas, coastal seas, and lakes.

NorESM4CMIP7

The project "Norwegian Earth System Modeling for CMIP7" will prepare and calibrate NorESM to conduct core simulation of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project 7 (CMIP7), which is pivotal for climate change assessments such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It will perform sensitivity experiments to provide robust, international scientific consensus on required emissions reductions to meet the Paris Agreement Targets.

SEACLIM

The project "European seas climate impact prediction through regional models" (SEACLIM) will provide regional information on future decadal-to-multidecadal changes in the marine environment and related impacts in European Seas. Leveraging regional ocean models of the Copernicus Marine Service, it will advance the understanding of physical and ecosystem processes to improve regional predictions and projections and develop pre-operational predictions of decadal and multi-decadal changes in the marine environment.

SAGE

The "Sea Ice Age and Drift" project will deliver the first global, long-term Climate Data Records for sea-ice age and drift, spanning the satellite era since the late 1970s. It will combine Lagrangian tracking with satellite-based classification to generate a hybrid sea-ice-age algorithm, extend drift records before 1991, and integrate multi-sensor data from passive microwave and scatterometer missions. Machine learning will enhance performance under challenging conditions such as melt–refreeze cycles and pancake ice regions. Products will be validated with in different data, include uncertainty estimates, and be applied in case studies to advance sea-ice research and climate model evaluation.

SMART OCEAN

The center for research-driven innovation "Smart Ocean" is developing a new underwater sensor and communication system along the Norwegian coastline to improve the sustainable management of marine resources, industrial equipment and structure in these regions.
