FOUNDATION STUDY

The aim of the "EO Science Strategy Foundation Study" project is to map the major and important scientific challenges within satellite-based earth observation in consultation with the scientific community. ESA will in the next phase be able to use this information to formulate its new strategy for earth observations in the period 2024-2030.

EUREC4A-OA

Scientists need a better understanding of how clouds form over the ocean and how the ocean and atmosphere are connected on daily time scales. The project "Improving the representation of small-scale nonlinear ocean-atmosphere interactions in climate models" shines a spotlight on these processes.

DAS

In the project "Digital Arctic Shipping - New data products and visualization services", various tools are developed to contribute to safer ship traffic in the Arctic. The products are based on various types of data, including the use of drones, and are tested on board vessels operating in icy waters in the region.

PECO2

The project "Partnership for Operational Oceanography" was created to develop a collaboration platform between the partner institutions in Norway, South Africa, China, France, and India. It will be used to share advanced knowledge and experience in operational oceanography and support the training and education of the next generation of experts. The voyage from Maputo to Cape Town aboard St. Lehmkuhl with 60 students from 25 nations is included in the teaching and training.

SEAMLESS

The methods used by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service to monitor marine ecosystems could benefit from improvements. The project "Services based on ecosystem data assimilation: essential science and solutions" will supplement the improvements.

TRIATLAS

Anticipating future changes in the marine ecosystem can support the sustainable management of marine ecosystems. In the project "South and Tropical Atlantic - climate-based marine ecosystem prediction for sustainable management", a method is being developed to predict the changes in the southern and tropical Atlantic Ocean.

LoVeOcean

In the "Lofoten-Vesterålen Marine Observatory"-project, advanced underwater technology is used to collect key data and provide fundamental new insight into marine processes, organisms, and conditions in the sea. New insights are needed to establish better models that focus on the status of marine ecosystems.

CVL

In the "Cryosphere Virtual Laboratory" project, an easily accessible system is being developed which will give access to a lot of Earth Observation data with a focus on the Arctic. The system will make it possible for users to develop their own systems to deliver information about the rapidly changing Arctic.

FOCUS

In the project "Accounting for forecast uncertainties in communicating sea ice and weather information in the Arctic", researchers work closely with users from the commercial and public sector to improve warning systems for weather and sea ice in the Arctic.

TURBAN

Extreme weather events such as long heat waves or cold spells reduce periods of comfortable temperatures in cities all over the world. In conjunction with increasing air pollution, life in cities is becoming more difficult. Modeling the air conditions in cities is therefore becoming more important and the project "Turbulent-resolving urban modeling of air quality and thermal control" is working on developing suitable methods.
