CMEMS Arctic Ocean MFC 22-24

The production of Arctic ocean data for the EU's "Copernicus"-program is led by the Nansen Center. Copernicus provides updated forecasts and reanalyses for the Arctic Ocean, including sea ice, biological, and chemical variables. Forecasts are relevant for safe navigation in the Arctic.

BASIC

The Arctic is changing: There is more open sea and less sea ice in the summer now, and more newly formed sea ice in the winter than a few decades ago. The project "Climate response to a bluer Arctic with increased newly-formed winter sea ice" will look at the consequences of these changes for the climate in the Arctic, in Europe and in Asia.

TARDIS

The thickness of sea ice in the Arctic is important for climate research. Since 2010, satellites have been used to measure the ice thickness from space, but before 2010 there was not enough good information. The project "Thickness of Arctic sea ice reconstructed by data assimilation and artificial intelligence seamlessly" will change this. The aim is to reconstruct the thickness of Arctic sea ice as it was before 2010.

URSA MAJOR

Our future civil engineers, ecologists, architects, managers and administrators need knowledge of digital networks, sensors and automated observations for smart and sustainable cities. In the project "Urban sustainability in action: multi-disciplinary approach through jointly organized research schools", these are trained to address practical challenges and local solutions in various cities around the world where climate change has the greatest impact.

MuSIC

Our sea-ice model neXtSIM receives quality assurance through adaptation of the model to satellite observations and through the use of new machine learning methods in the "Multi-scale sea ice code" project. The model has great potential to represent sea-ice conditions in the best possible way and can improve climate models that struggle with realistic representation of sea ice.

S23Eddy

In the sea near Lofoten, there are large eddies that can be seen on the surface and reach down to a depth of 1000 m. With the combined use of satellite and ocean data, researchers in the project "Synergy to Characterization of 3D Eddy Structures" are trying to find out more about the eddies. What characterizes the currents, what is their significance for the ecosystem in the area and how is the interaction between the atmosphere and the sea affected?

SASIP

In the "Scale-Aware Sea Ice Project", a new way of modeling sea ice is being developed. Producing high-resolution and large-scale predictions of sea ice will lead to a better understanding of how increased warming affects polar regions. This project is supported by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt that bets early on exceptional people making the world better, particularly through innovative breakthroughs in science and technology. It is a project of Schmidt Futures' Virtual Earth System Research Institute (VESRI).

UAK

The main goal of the "Useful Arctic Knowledge" project has been to establish long-term cooperation between teaching and research institutions in Norway, the USA and Canada within selected themes in the Arctic.

SEAMLESS

The methods used by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service to monitor marine ecosystems could benefit from improvements. The project "Services based on ecosystem data assimilation: essential science and solutions" will supplement the improvements.

TURBAN

Extreme weather events such as long heat waves or cold spells reduce periods of comfortable temperatures in cities all over the world. In conjunction with increasing air pollution, life in cities is becoming more difficult. Modeling the air conditions in cities is therefore becoming more important and the project "Turbulent-resolving urban modeling of air quality and thermal control" is working on developing suitable methods.
