Ongoing projects

DRAGON6

"DRAGON 6" is a collaborative program between ESA and MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) in China with a focus on using measurements from satellites (Copernicus Sentinels, ESA, Chinese) in geoscience and monitoring. There are Chinese and European collaborative teams participating that address different topics within Earth system research, including oceanography, meteorology, geology, ecosystem, environment and climate.

ForWArd

With the decline in Arctic sea ice in the last decades, and the trend expecting to continue in the future, the Arctic Ocean is more and more exposed to larger waves due to winds. In the "Forecasting wave impact as Arctic sea ice declines" project,  the impact of waves on sea-ice evolution in the rougher and rougher Arctic Ocean will be assessed.    

ARCA

The project "Biocultural Heritage in Arctic Cities: Resource for Climate Adaptation?" aims to understand how traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous knowledge, and human-environment relationships that form the core of biocultural heritage can contribute to climate change adaptation in urban areas and surrounding landscapes. The focus lies on Fairbanks and Nome (USA), and Kirkenes and Tromsø (Norway).  

ARCFISH

The project “Digital Twin of the Ocean for Arctic Fisheries” is a Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP) project that will develop a pilot Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO) Platform delivering new data products and services in support of sustainable Arctic Fisheries. These data products and services will be co-designed with stakeholders in the fisheries sector to create products such as ecosystem indices that can be applied in fisheries planning and management.

ARKTALAS CCN 2

The "Arktalas Hoavva" project characterizes large-scale interactive processes and feedbacks that cause changes in the Arctic sea ice and the Arctic Ocean and the surrounding oceans using satellite observations, direct observations and modeling tools.

HarSval

The project "A bilateral initiative for harmonisation of the Svalbard cooperation" aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Norway and Poland, expand the network of partners and the scope of existing research activities, as well as transfer knowledge, technology, experience and best practices.

S23Eddy Phase 2

In the sea near Lofoten, there are large eddies that can be seen on the surface and reach down to a depth of 1000 m. With the combined use of satellite and ocean data, researchers in the project "Synergy to Characterization of 3D Eddy Structures" are trying to find out more about the eddies. What characterizes the currents, what is their significance for the ecosystem in the area and how is the interaction between the atmosphere and the sea affected?

ObsSea4Clim

Ocean observing is executed and financed by nations according to their national interest and needs, but aligned with European and international agreements and directives. To improve sustained and multipurpose observations vital to European and global climate requirements, the project "Ocean Observations and Indicators for Climate and Assessments" brings together key European actors within ocean observing science, climate assessment, Earth System modelling, data sharing and standards, with users of oceanographic products and services to deliver an improved observation framework based on essential ocean variables.
