4SICE

Human activities in the Arctic such as transport or tourism can only take place in a safe way with good forecasts for sea ice, both for months and seasons in advance. These forecasts need improvement. The project "Towards skillful subseasonal-to-seasonal sea ice prediction" aims to improve one of our sea-ice models and use new information from the Arctic to be able to produce better sea-ice forecasts for these periods.

MAPARC

The project "Mechanism and prediction of the new Arctic climate system" aims to create a better understanding of what leads to climate change in the Arctic. At the same time, research will be conducted into how the new climate in the region can be predicted better with improved calculation methods.

SASIP

In the "Scale-Aware Sea Ice Project", a new way of modeling sea ice is being developed. Producing high-resolution and large-scale predictions of sea ice will lead to a better understanding of how increased warming affects polar regions. This project is supported by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt that bets early on exceptional people making the world better, particularly through innovative breakthroughs in science and technology. It is a project of Schmidt Futures' Virtual Earth System Research Institute (VESRI).

C3S2

There is a large database for climate data all over the world that is part of the EU's Earth observation system Copernicus. In the project "Tender C3S2_520 for Quality Assurance for Datasets in the Climate Data Store", the data is quality assured to ensure that it is reliable.

ACCIBERG

The presence of sea ice and icebergs in the Arctic Ocean presents challenges for shipping, fisheries and tourism. Rising temperatures lead to increased ship traffic in the area. The project "Arctic Cross-Copernicus forecast products for sea ice and icebergs" aims to create precise warnings about the spread of sea ice and icebergs, both in the near future and through seasonal forecasts. The research will contribute to safer navigation in the Arctic.

NECCTON

Biodiversity in the sea is absolutely essential for over three billion people on earth, both for work and food. The project "New Copernicus capability for trophic ocean networks" aims to develop new products to support improved conservation of diversity and management of food resources.

ObsSea4Clim

Ocean observing is executed and financed by nations according to their national interest and needs, but aligned with European and international agreements and directives. To improve sustained and multipurpose observations vital to European and global climate requirements, the project "Ocean Observations and Indicators for Climate and Assessments" brings together key European actors within ocean observing science, climate assessment, Earth System modelling, data sharing and standards, with users of oceanographic products and services to deliver an improved observation framework based on essential ocean variables.

FOCCUS

The main ambition of the project "Forecasting and observing the open-to-coastal ocean for Copernicus users" is to improve and advance the coastal dimension of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service by enhancing existing capability, developing innovative coastal products.

Arctic-BLISS

The "Arctic atmospheric Boundary Layer Influence in Sea ice ensemble Simulations: a predictability & sensitivity study" (Arctic-BLISS) project aims to assess the short-term predictability of sea ice drift, a challenging problem posed by the daily to weekly forecasts in the polar regions. The project will use the state-of-the-art sea-ice model with a brittle rheology, coupled to an interactive atmospheric boundary layer and perform ensemble forecasts to evaluate predictability.

FRACCEO

The project "Flood Risk Assessment in a Changing Climate for Cities using EO" focuses on the development of a methodology that combines Earth Observation data, specifically the Essential Climate Variable datasets from the ESA Climate Change Initiative programmes, with hydrodynamic models to improve the prediction of extreme water levels at the coast and subsequently the assessment of flood risk in coastal cities under climate change.
