Completed projects

ALERTNESS

The project "Advanced models and weather prediction in the Arctic: Enhanced capacity from observations and polar process representations" developed methods and tools to produce better and more reliable weather forecasts for arctic areas. The focus was on events of great importance to the local population.

RISES

Ice covered all of Scandinavia approximately 13,000 years ago. It melted over time, and the project "Quantifying and understanding rates of ice sheet change" investigated how this happened in order to make estimates of how the Greenland ice sheet will melt in the future.

TOPVOYS

The project "Tools for optimizing performance of voyages at sea" worked on improving and implementing tools to make ship traffic safer, more environmentally friendly and optimized with regard to the weather, fuel consumption, emissions and minimal travel time.

ARCTIC SYNTHESIS

The project "Arctic synthesis of the Nordic sea" brought together the state of knowledge about past, present, and future climate change in the Nordic seas.

INTAROS

The project "Integrated Arctic Observation System" aimed to develop an effective Arctic observation system by expanding, improving and unifying existing and new systems across the Arctic. The data from many field experiments in deep sea, coastal and land areas contribute to climate monitoring and modeling in the Arctic.

SFE

Weather forecasts are rarely accurate more than five to ten days ahead. This is due to the chaotic nature of the weather, also known as the "butterfly effect". The "Seasonal Forecasting Engine" project has mainly involved using physical and statistical models to develop methods for calculating the probability of various weather scenarios from ten to a hundred days into the future.

NorDataNet

The "Norwegian Scientific Data Network" project developed a virtual data management system where existing geoscientific data management systems are linked together. The purpose is to simplify the process of finding, downloading and using scientific data.

AOIP

The processes that take place between the atmosphere, the ocean and the sea ice are important for the climate in and near the polar regions. The project "Atmosphere-Ocean-Ice Interactions in Polar and sub-polar Regions" assessed how necessary it is to include these in the best possible way in NorESM, the earth system model from Bergen.

FYB

The purpose of the activity "Float Your Boat" is to increase understanding of climate processes, the Arctic and the importance of research through the active involvement of schoolchildren.

Blue-Action

The project "Blue-Action: Arctic impact on weather and climate" investigated the effects that the Arctic has on the weather and climate. The focus of the research was the northern hemisphere and the findings help to produce better weather forecasts and long-term forecasts of the changes in the climate.
