EmblAUS

The atmosphere and ocean have chaotic features and are difficult to simulate. The project "Ensemble-based data Assimilation for environmental monitoring and prediction in the Unstable Subspace" improved mathematical processes to make this easier.

SIA

Arctic sea ice has undergone major changes in recent decades: It has become thinner and younger. The age is important to scientists because it has a major impact on the changes in the ice. The "Sea ice age" project worked to improve the possibilities of calculating the age using mathematical methods.

SPICES

In the project "Space-borne observations for detecting and forecasting sea ice cover extremes", researchers developed new methods to obtain information about sea ice from satellites. Great focus was placed on extreme conditions.

UNDER ICE

The progress between Svalbard and Greenland is interesting for researchers from various disciplines. In the project "Arctic Ocean under melting ice", the researchers deployed a network of acoustic sensors in the Fram Strait to obtain new knowledge about the sea and the processes in this area, which is partially covered by ice during the year.

neXtWIM

The interaction between sea ice and waves in the Arctic becomes more important along the ice edge. In the project "Waves in a next-generation sea-ice model", two forecasting systems were linked together to produce the best possible forecasts for the ice edge zone.

OSI TAC WITS

Data from satellites can provide a wealth of information about the ocean. In the project "OSI TAC Wind, Sea Ice and Temperature at the Sea Surface Service", researchers worked to make these available and usable through the Copernicus service.

IMOS

In the "Isfjorden Marine Observatory Svalbard" project, researchers monitored plankton in the Isfjorden at Svalbard to study the effects of climate change at the base of the Arctic food web.

IceMotion

Sea ice is one of the most prominent climate indicators in the Arctic, and sea ice data is therefore important both in climate research and in operational monitoring and ice map production. The project "High resolution sea-ice motion from Synthetic Aperture Radar using pattern tracking and Doppler shift" has focused on deriving high-resolution sea-ice motion data from SAR satellites.
