Helene R. Langehaug

Project Manager, Senior Researcher

Helene R. Langehaug obtained her doctoral degree in physical oceanography at the University of Bergen in 2011, while employed at the Nansen Center. She has a background in ocean circulation and water masses in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Mediterranean.

Langehaug is interested in understanding variability in the ocean and assessing the extent to which this is represented in global climate models and climate predictions. She is particularly interested in marine heatwaves, how they occur and whether they can be predicted. Her main goal is to improve the quality of climate forecasts in the Atlantic-Arctic region. She is deputy leader of the Arctic Ocean 2050 program, in which 18 partners have joined forces to increase knowledge about the Arctic Ocean. She also heads the ocean team under Sustainable Food Production in the Climate Futures project. Langehaug is a member of the Polar Climate research group at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, and also holds a position at the University of Bergen, where she teaches Advanced Dynamic Oceanography.
