Highlights from our activities in 2025 – building knowledge for the future

We are pleased to present a new selection of activities and research results, and to show how our research contributes to the future.

Climate, ocean conditions and the Arctic are central to Norwegian and European strategies, creating a growing demand for knowledge, innovation and sustainable solutions. At the same time, increasing needs for expertise in security, data, and new technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital twins are strengthening our relevance as a research institute.

The year was characterised by high research activity, strong international collaboration, and further development of integrated, data‑driven methods. Particularly the combination of machine learning and data assimilation, have contributed to more accurate models and forecasts, strengthening both scientific quality and societal relevance. We also expanded its research to Antarctica, where methods developed for the Arctic are now being applied in new environments, contributing to a wider global climate perspective.

In 2025, we strengthened the links between observations, understanding, modelling and forecasting. This consolidated our scientific position while delivering research with clear societal relevance related to global ocean and climate challenges. We also further developed our operational services, including forecasts of marine heatwaves, harmful algal blooms, sea ice and icebergs, thereby turning research into practical tools for management and preparedness.
