Student Evening opens doors to ocean and climate research

How do researchers use artificial intelligence to better understand the ocean? What does it take to monitor sea ice in a changing Arctic? And what does a career in research actually look like?

These were some of the questions explored during the Nansen Center’s Student Evening this week, where students from the University of Bergen met researchers and learned more about opportunities for master’s theses, PhD studies and careers in ocean, climate, and Arctic science.

The evening brought together students from multiple fields in the natural sciences and technology for a series of short presentations covering topics ranging from AI and ocean data to Arctic observations and sea ice, as well as life as a researcher. Just as importantly, it offered an opportunity for informal conversations between students and researchers across disciplines.

A recurring theme in discussions with participants was the breadth of research at the Nansen Center. Several students said they were surprised by and excited about how diverse the Center’s activities are, having previously been more familiar with other local research institutions. Others highlighted the value of seeing how expertise from fields ranging from biology and acoustics to remote sensing and data science comes together to address environmental challenges.

Many students were equally interested in the people behind the research. Information on researchers’ career journeys generated considerable engagement, with participants highlighting the value of hearing about non-linear career paths and gaining insight into everyday life as a researcher.

The event concluded with discussions on research topics, career opportunities, and future collaborations. For both students and researchers, the evening provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, build connections, and explore the many ways to contribute to ocean, climate, and Arctic research.
