Footprints into the future – highlights from 2023

We are happy to share our recent achievements, scientific discoveries, and their impacts on the future.

Through our research activities, we play a significant role in the development of advanced observation systems, model simulations, and climate predictions, which are important contributions to increased knowledge about the future and the necessary needs for climate adaptation and preparedness.

The annual report describes research in the Arctic, where the transition from an ice-covered to an open ocean also affects conditions in other parts of the world. Through our work on collecting data on conditions in this region, we help to shed light on ongoing changes and their consequences.

We have an increased focus on coastal areas, as these regions are vulnerable to changes in weather and ocean conditions, affecting industries and settlements.

Data assimilation is a very important component of our research work, and we are constantly finding new applications for methods developed at the Nansen Center almost 40 years ago.

The annual report also describes how machine learning techniques are being used in different ways, and how they are helping to constantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of climate research.
