The model is used both for operational services and for more traditional research.<\/p><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Our in-house sea-ice model &#8220;neXtSIM&#8221;, which means &#8220;next-generation sea-ice model&#8221;, is unique in several ways. In essence, the handling of the sea-ice rheology distinguishes our model from similar models. Rheology is the study of how solids deform and move. The model uses physics and mathematics that describe how forces act on solid rock, so-called rock fracture dynamics. Researchers in France, Germany, and the UK are contributing to the model development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We use &#8220;neXtSIM&#8221; to produce forecasts that are widely available through the Copernicus Marine Service, and to research changes in sea ice in Arctic regions. By making sea-ice forecasts available, we help to strengthen safety in northern sea areas. Here, sea ice can be a safety risk for ship traffic and other activities at sea. We also use the model to see what effects storms have on sea ice, and how it breaks up under different conditions.
