The ice cover has been declining drastically in recent decades, and the trend towards an increasingly blue Arctic is expected to continue. Studies of the sea ice are important in order to understand the rapid climate changes in the Arctic, and to manage risks associated with increasing human activity in the region.\">Sea ice is affected by what happens both in the air above and in the water below and is a good indicator of how the climate is changing. The ice cover has been declining drastically in recent decades, and the trend towards an increasingly blue Arctic is expected to continue. Studies of the sea ice are important in order to understand the rapid climate changes in the Arctic, and to manage risks associated with increasing human activity in the region.<\/p><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">How the sea ice moves is important for where ice forms and where it melts, and where the ice is thin and where it is thick. At the Nansen Center, we have developed a unique sea-ice model that can recreate the ice&#8217;s actual movements. The model is called &#8220;neXtSIM&#8221; and it has a unique way of simulating how the ice is pressed together and forms ridges, or cracks open and forms leads. In traditional sea-ice models, the ice movements have not been correctly calculated. &#8220;neXtSIM&#8221; is based on newer mathematical calculation methods that make it possible to simulate how the ice cracks open. The model can also be used to see what effect wind and ocean currents have on the ice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We also research the extent and thickness of the sea ice. In winter, new ice forms, and this ice cover spreads south. When summer comes, some of the ice melts and the ice cover shrinks again. In recent decades, the distribution has changed, both in summer and winter. We see that the extent of sea ice has decreased, and the ice has become thinner. Climate change could lead to ice-free summers in the Arctic in a few decades. We examine the ongoing changes, what causes them, and how they relate to climatic conditions in other geographical areas. This is done using &#8220;neXtSIM&#8221; and with the help of satellite data. These forecasts need improvement. Producing high-resolution and large-scale predictions of sea ice will lead to a better understanding of how increased warming affects polar regions.\r\n\r\n<em>This project is supported by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt that bets early on exceptional people making the world better, particularly through innovative breakthroughs in science and technology. sea ice and icebergs in the Arctic Ocean presents challenges for shipping, fisheries and tourism. Rising temperatures lead to increased ship traffic in the area. The project \"<em>Arctic Cross-Copernicus forecast products for sea ice and icebergs<\/em>\" aims to create precise warnings about the spread of sea ice and icebergs, both in the near future and through seasonal forecasts.
