Timothy Smith is interested in developing machine learning and data assimilation systems that can produce the most realistic weather and climate predictions. His background is interdisciplinary, and he enjoys integrating advancements from mathematics and computational science into a variety of applications, from medium-range weather forecasting to reanalysis production.<\/p>\n
Before joining the Nansen Center, Smith worked in the Modeling and Data Assimilation Division of NOAA’s Physical Sciences Lab (PSL) in Boulder, Colorado, USA. At PSL, he designed machine learning weather emulators for forecasting and data assimilation applications. His work involved a range of prediction systems, from Lorenz-type idealizations of weather dynamics to NOAA’s operational forecasting system.<\/p>\n
Smith obtained his Ph.D. in Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics in 2021 from the Oden Institute at The University of Texas at Austin.
